R&D Background: ABB Switzerland launched the RE.216 series digital relay protection devices in the 1990s for power protection of generator sets and substations. The 216VC62a is the main CPU board of the complete device. The whole system consists of processor unit, analog input unit, relay output unit and power supply unit, adopting a 19‑inch rack plug‑in structure.More products: www.plcva.com
Positioning: It acts as the brain of the protection system. All protection logic, setting storage, computation and communication are performed on this board. With 425% computing capacity, it can run multiple sets of relay protection algorithms simultaneously, including generator differential protection, over‑current protection, earthing protection, loss‑of‑excitation protection and others.
Current Status: This series of hardware has been discontinued. It is an obsolete spare part in the industrial control spare‑parts market, mainly used for maintenance and replacement of existing power plants and substations. No brand‑new original units are available from the manufacturer.

III. Core Functions
Note: It does not directly collect CT/PT analog signals on‑site. Analog signals are processed by the 216EA61/EA62 analog input boards. This board is responsible for computation, logic processing, data storage and communication.
- Protection Logic Computation Executes various relay protection algorithms from the built‑in protection software library. It receives current and voltage sampling data from analog input boards, identifies faults, and sends tripping commands to relay output boards.
- Setting & Parameter Storage Stores the setting values and configuration parameters of the entire protection device. It supports parameter download from a PC. Non‑volatile memory retains configurations after power‑off.
- System Bus Communication
- Inter‑board bus: IBB (Interbay Bus), for interaction with other I/O boards inside the rack.
- External communication: SPA‑BUS, LON‑BUS, MVB. Equipped with RS‑423 serial port for local PC debugging and parameter reading/writing. LON/MVB protocols can be expanded via PCMCIA expansion cards.
- Fault Diagnosis & Event Logging Records fault events, protection operation sequences and alarm information. On‑board LED status indicators are provided for hardware fault troubleshooting.
- Redundancy Support Supports dual‑processor‑board redundant configuration for hot standby operation. Failure of one single board will not cause the entire protection system to fail.

⚠️ Note: This is not a DCS process‑control board. Many vendors misclassify it as DCS hardware. It is a dedicated CPU board for power relay protection, not for DCS process control.
