Introduction
1.Term Explanation
- TRICONEX: Brand (Kangjisen), a Tricon Triple Modular Redundant (TMR) SIS Safety Instrumented System brand under Schneider Electric, deployed for ESD, F&G and BMS safety interlock in chemical, oil & gas and power industries.
- HCU3700: Full series of Tricon analog input IO cards; 3703E denotes the FTA terminal board within this series.
- 3703E: Type E hardware revision field terminal assembly, dedicated to match HCU3700 analog input cards.
- Analog Input: Analog signal acquisition for standard 4–20mA field transmitters measuring pressure, temperature, level and flow.
- FTA: Field Terminal Assembly, external wiring terminal accessory matched with IO cards, providing isolated signal transfer, surge protection and wiring distribution between rack IO cards and field instrument cables.
- with HART Interface: Integrated HART digital communication port compatible with HART smart transmitters; superimposes digital diagnostic, commissioning and parameter signals onto standard 4–20mA analog loops.
Supplementary Core Architecture Note:
The FTA is a supporting accessory and cannot operate independently. It must be installed in front of HCU3700 series triple redundant AI cards on rack backplanes as the external wiring interface.
Dual separated signal paths: one 4–20mA analog safety measurement loop for SIS interlock logic, and an independent superimposed HART digital channel for upper HART commissioning tools. The two paths are electrically isolated without mutual interference and will not disrupt SIS safety scan cycles.
Built-in per-channel protection circuits including current limiting, lightning surge suppression and reverse polarity protection to prevent costly AI main card damage caused by field short circuits, lightning strikes or wiring errors.
Fully compatible with TMR 2-out-of-3 fault-tolerant architecture; three independent acquisition loops each equipped with separate HART channels. Fault on a single channel does not impair safe signal collection of the other two paths.
Revised E hardware enhances HART anti-interference performance, wide-temperature operation and terminal layout optimization, and supports intrinsically safe explosion-proof loops when paired with safety barriers for hazardous classified areas.

2. Core Main Purposes
- Transfer wiring for field analog instruments (fundamental core function) Serves as internal rack terminal junction: multi-core field instrument cables terminate at the 3703E FTA, with internal jumpers connecting to rear HCU3700 AI cards. It standardizes wiring for construction, maintenance and loop isolation testing, avoiding backplane damage from frequent IO card plugging.
- Isolated acquisition of 4–20mA analog process signals Receives standard 4–20mA signals from field pressure, temperature, level, flow and combustible gas transmitters, and transmits intact signals to triple redundant AI cards for ESD, HIPPS and F&G safety interlock judgment by MP3101S2 / MP3005 / MP3006 main processors.
- HART digital communication for reading/writing smart transmitter parameters Superimposed HART channel supports handheld HART communicators or upper HART management software for online operation of field smart transmitters:
- Retrieve instrument range, engineering units, serial numbers and self-diagnostic fault codes;
- Remotely modify transmitter measurement ranges, alarm thresholds and damping parameters;
- Real-time monitoring of instrument hardware faults, sensor drift and loop voltage drop to enable predictive instrument maintenance. The HART digital communication path is independent of safety analog loops; read/write operations will not disturb 4–20mA safety measurement values or trigger spurious interlock trips.
- Loop hardware protection to safeguard SIS IO cards Per-channel multi-stage protection circuits include reverse polarity prevention, overcurrent limiting and TVS lightning surge suppression. During field cable short-circuit, lightning surge or miswiring, fault energy is isolated and cut off to prevent burnout of rear AI main cards and reduce spare part replacement costs.
- Adaptation for intrinsically safe explosion-proof loops Dedicated mounting positions for safety barriers are reserved on the terminal board. When paired with isolating or zener barriers, the FTA can be deployed in Class I Division 1 / 2 hazardous instrument loops, complying with petrochemical explosion-proof standards.
- Isolated loop testing and maintenance Independent test terminals are integrated per channel. Technicians can connect multimeters or signal generators to calibrate individual transmitters without disconnecting main rack cables, while all other channels maintain continuous safe acquisition during maintenance.
- Independent HART diagnostics for triple redundant loops All three TMR acquisition channels feature separate HART interfaces, allowing individual retrieval of instrument status per loop. Hidden faults such as single-path signal attenuation or poor contact can be rapidly located, with equipment diagnostic alarms uploaded to the control system.

3. Applicable Application Scenarios
Scenario 1: Large integrated refinery & ethylene plants (Core Application)
Acquisition of HART smart transmitters for reactor, furnace and storage tank pressure, level and temperature signals in oil refineries, PX and ethylene facilities, supporting SIS ESD emergency shutdown interlock. The HART function enables batch remote instrument calibration to minimize manual work in high-risk process zones.
Scenario 2: LNG plants, offshore oil & gas platforms and long-distance transmission pipelines
HART pressure and level transmitters for LNG storage tanks, offshore platform F&G systems and pipeline HIPPS overpressure protection systems. The 3703E explosion-proof design adapts to coastal hazardous areas, with surge protection resisting lightning strikes and electromagnetic interference offshore.
Scenario 3: High-temperature & high-pressure sections of coal chemical, ammonia and methanol plants
Intelligent instrument loops for gasifiers and synthesis towers in hazardous explosion-proof workshops. Remote HART diagnostics detect sensor aging in advance to prevent unplanned interlock trips caused by process limit violations.
Scenario 4: BMS furnace safety supervision for gas-fired & thermal power boilers
Acquisition of HART furnace temperature and gas pressure transmitters for boiler burner management systems. The independent HART channel supports online instrument calibration without disturbing furnace safety interlock signals.
Scenario 5: Skid-mounted LNG and modular chemical complete sets
Compact Tricon systems integrated into skid-mounted equipment. The 3703E combines wiring terminals and HART communication in one assembly to simplify skid cabinet cabling and allow batch HART parameter calibration before factory delivery.
Scenario 6: Explosion-proof multi-reactor workshops of fine chemical & pharmaceutical industries
Intrinsically safe loops for HART temperature and pressure transmitters on explosion-proof reaction kettles. Remote HART diagnostics reduce frequent cabinet opening maintenance in classified hazardous zones.
Scenario 7: Overseas export projects of complete oil & gas and chemical equipment
Global universal HART protocol, SIL3-compatible FTA design, UL/CE explosion-proof certifications and standardized terminals compatible with international instrument cable specifications, facilitating commissioning and maintenance for overseas sites.
